2014 CARnivale – 26 January

Another great ICCA Premier Event Australia day car show in Macquarie St, Sydney.  The cars assembled in the Domain car park for an 8.30AM start and then went by convoy from the Domain to Macquarie St at around 9.30AM after the customary free coffee and sizzle.  This year we were opposite the Botanic Park entrance and closer to the Quay and again had shelter from the elements.  Morning rain showers had us worried, but they stopped and we had a cool, overcast day to enjoy the company of fellow members and the many tens of THOUSANDS of people enjoying the show.

There was great interest in the 18 Isuzus that were displayed: Ian Frank’s Piazza, Josh Bailey’s Gemini, Michael Degnan’s Gemini, Dennis Smith’s Bellett sedan, Gary Carter’s 117, Alan Cherry’s Florian, 4 Bellett sedans: Bob Bailey, Matthew Smith, Neville Hannah & Gary Smith, Warren Gore’s Wasp and then 7 GTs in a row: Lewis Bolton, Jack Curtis, Neil Miller, David Maurice, Greg Moller, Tom Amos & Geoff Moller.

The quality of our display improves every year and we should be proud that our club fields such a large number of cars.  Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our “out of town” members: Dennis & Margaret Smith, Gary Carter, Alan Cherry, Matthew & Tracey Smith, Gary & Monnica Smith, Warren & Janeece Gore, Lewis Bolton, Greg Moller & Liz Trembath, Geoff & Christine Moller and David Maurice.  We’d be a much smaller group without you!

The Carnival this year was bigger and better then before and combined with the Sydney festival in Hyde Park there was much to see and lots to do for all ages which was reflected in the larger crowds and the that many stopped and talked.

Annual General Meeting

After Carnival that evening those members who could make it, attended the BBQ and AGM at Oatley.  There was on show some 200 or so 50th Anniversary historic pictures and videos going back from current to 1968.  That ensured a good evening of story-telling and lots of staring and looking at some then very young current members.  The annual formalities were completed in under an hour and only after tummies were filled and some serious relaxing had been accomplished. A great evening and BBQ.

Drive Day – 27 January

Assembling in cars at the Oval near the Royal National Park turn off, the Drive day enthusiasts set off from Loftus and drove at leisurely pace to Robertson via Stanwell Tops lookout, the Sea Cliff Bridge, Albion Park & Macquarie Pass.  It was very pleasant day for a scenic drive with a crystal clear no haze day and bright sunlight that afforded great views at Sea Cliff and on the climb up the Pass.

We had the obligatory “break down” from the Carter 117 on the Pass which needed a new fuel filter and there was the normal “run” up the hair pins bends.  Christina & Ian met us at Robertson, having booked a fabulous old Robertson pub location for our lunch.

A “reverse observation run” was conducted after lunch (14 questions about where they’d been in the morning), and won by (how predictable was this) Warren & Karen Degnan.  But “only just”.  Half a point behind were two teams - Bob & Yvonne Bailey & Geoff & Christine Moller, followed by the rest: Tahlia & Josh Bailey, John & Lewis Bolton, Neil & Jan Miller, Michael & Michelle Degnan with their Norwegian guests, Gary Carter, Christina & Ian (who didn’t even drive!) Greg Moller & Liz Trembath who were clearly enjoying themselves far too much so far from Brisbane!

A great club drive day and in the afternoon there was optional retail therapy in the Southern Highlands, coffee and cake in Mittagong before the run back along the expressway.
